Growing up with a mother who raised her son on a waitress’ tips, Governor Beebe understands firsthand the importance of a good education and wants to make the world-class education he received in Arkansas a reality for all students. As Governor, Mike Beebe promised to make education a top priority. The positive results for Arkansas prove Mike Beebe kept that promise.
Four years ago, Mike Beebe promised to move our public schools beyond adequacy and on to a path for excellence. Since then, we ended the decades long court dispute on the adequacy of an Arkansas education and are on the path to excellence. Arkansas ranks tenth in the nation for public schools by Education Week and now ranks in the top five in the nation for public high-school graduates taking Advanced Placement Exams. In 2007, Governor Beebe led the expansion of pre-kindergarten education in the Arkansas Better Chance program. Our students’ math and reading scores on ACT college entrance exams are at all-time highs for the State, with the gap between the scores of majority and minority students narrowing.
The Higher Education Opportunities Grant program, one of Governor Beebe’s initiatives, offers financial help to low income Arkansans who want to pursue a college education. Mike Beebe expanded the Arkansas Career Pathways Initiative, an adult learners program at Arkansas’s community colleges, so more of our people can learn new skills and get better paying jobs.
Governor Mike Beebe believes in Arkansas. He believes in the value of our pre-kindergarten program, in our public schools and our public colleges and universities. As educators and Arkansans, we believe in Arkansas. We believe that our state will only fully reach its potential through education. We believe Mike Beebe shares these values, and that he is the right person to lead our state and our education system on a path to nationally and globally-competitive excellence.
